A rainy holiday weekend drive turned into one of our favorite local food stops yet

There are some places you visit for the food.

Then there are places you visit because the entire experience just makes you feel good.

That was our experience this weekend at Station 66.

On a gloomy Saturday during a holiday weekend, we weren’t quite sure what to expect when we made the drive out there.

The outdoor area was understandably quiet because of the weather, but the moment we stepped inside, the place was absolutely hopping with people.

That alone told us something before we ever took our first bite.

And honestly, it didn’t take long to understand why.

Station 66 has created something that feels both nostalgic and welcoming at the same time.

The restored old gas station atmosphere gives the entire place character you simply can’t manufacture.

Everywhere you look there are little details that make the place feel alive with history.

Vintage signs line the walls, old photos tell the story of the original station and its owners, and classic 1940s vehicles appear throughout the displays like snapshots frozen in time.

One of the coolest touches was the old-style 45 jukebox that was actually working, adding even more to the throwback atmosphere.

Even the tables had laminated historical newspaper clippings built into them, giving customers something interesting to read while they waited for their food.

It doesn’t feel corporate.

It feels personal.

And that matters.

As for the food, everything we tried was excellent.

I went in wanting to try the Reuben, but I had also heard good things about the famous Battle Creek Dog, so I compromised and ordered a half Reuben so I could experience both.

That turned out to be the perfect move.

The Battle Creek Dog absolutely lived up to the reputation.

Loaded with bacon, grilled onions, and cheese, it was messy in the best possible way and packed with flavor from the first bite to the last.

The Reuben had a really interesting twist that stood out immediately.

Instead of the standard sauerkraut, they use more of a pickled red cabbage that gave the sandwich a brighter, fresher flavor while still delivering everything you want from a good Reuben.

It was one of those small creative touches that showed somebody in the kitchen actually cares.

I also tried the fresh asparagus soup, and it may have been one of the biggest surprises of the visit.

You could instantly tell it was homemade and fresh. Rich, comforting, and full of flavor, it tasted like something made from scratch instead of poured from a bag.

My wife ordered her favorite cheeseburger and fries, and both were very good as well.

The burger had that classic diner-style feel that fit perfectly with the atmosphere of the restaurant.

And of course, we couldn’t leave without trying some of the hand-scooped ice cream to finish everything off.

But one of the things that really impressed us most had nothing to do with the food.

It was the people.

The gentleman helping us at the counter, Christian, was incredibly friendly and hardworking the entire time we were there.

He was taking orders, running food into the dining room, restocking supplies, helping customers, and still managing to keep a positive attitude while staying busy nonstop.

Beyond that, the entire crew just seemed happy to work together.

At one point, we overheard one employee telling another, “It was great working with you today” as they were leaving.

That may sound like a small thing, but it actually says a lot.

You can usually tell when a business has strong management and a healthy work culture because it trickles down into everything else.

The atmosphere at Station 66 felt genuine, friendly, and welcoming from top to bottom.

That kind of environment doesn’t happen by accident.

Station 66 may be a little outside of town for some people, but after visiting, we can honestly say it is well worth the drive.

Between the nostalgic atmosphere, the fascinating local history, the homemade food, and the genuinely friendly people, this place feels like one of those hidden gems that deserves community support.

If you enjoy local restaurants with personality, history, and heart, Station 66 should absolutely be on your list.

And judging by how busy they were on a rainy holiday weekend, it looks like a lot of people are already figuring that out.
