We Are Saints Again: Taco Tuesday and a Family Story in Battle Creek

A Taco Tuesday Visit to Saints Again

Some restaurants are about a quiet dinner. Others are places where you can grab a good meal, catch up with friends, hear some music, and watch a few games of pool.

That's the feeling we found at We Are Saints Again Bar & Grill, a neighborhood gathering spot at 517 E. Michigan Avenue in Battle Creek.

My daughter and I stopped in on Tuesday evening, just as the after-work crowd was settling in. We found a busy pool scene, friendly service from Lisa, and a menu that gave us plenty to think about before we finally settled on a Taco Tuesday feast.

We shared beef nachos, I tried the taco pizza, and my daughter chose a chicken bacon ranch sandwich with house-cut fries. The portions were generous, and there was a lot to enjoy. But what really made this visit interesting was learning the family story behind the unusual name, and seeing firsthand how this place serves as a gathering spot for people who enjoy good food, music, and a game of pool.

There's a Family Story Behind That Name

I had wondered about the name We Are Saints Again, so naturally I asked.

Our server, Lisa, explained that the current owners are Andy and Carrie Case, and that Carrie's parents had owned the place years earlier.

When the family took it over again, the name We Are Saints Again made perfect sense.

I love finding out little stories like that. They make a local business more than just a name on a sign.

A Neighborhood Bar With Its Own Personality

We arrived around 5:45 p.m., when folks were already gathering after work.

The pool tables were busy, and I noticed that many of the players had brought their own cues.

Now, that doesn't necessarily mean they're good players, but it certainly tells me they're serious about their pool!

Saints Again is also known for having great bands on weekends, so it's easy to see how the place becomes a destination for more than dinner.

And mark your calendar: we heard about a big Halloween party planned for Friday, October 30.

Check with the bar for the latest event details.

Taco Tuesday Was Calling Our Name

We started looking over the menu, which had plenty of choices, including burgers, grinders, flatbreads, wraps, and a variety of appetizers.

But it was Tuesday, and the Taco Tuesday choices caught our attention.

We decided to share an order of beef nachos, I went with the taco pizza, and my daughter ordered a chicken bacon ranch sandwich with house-cut fries.

Lisa helped us sort through the choices and made us feel welcome.

First Up: A Loaded Basket of Nachos

The beef nachos came out piled with toppings, including melted cheese, seasoned beef, tomatoes, onions, and black olives, with salsa and sour cream alongside.

They were just the thing to share while we waited for the rest of dinner. We were hungry, and those nachos hit the spot.

There was plenty going on in that basket, and they made a satisfying start to our meal.

Then Came the Taco Pizza

When my taco pizza arrived, I was impressed with how it looked.

It was loaded with taco-style toppings, including beef, lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, and olives.

There were so many toppings that I ended up giving my slices a little support with a fork!

It was a fun, hearty take on pizza and fit the Taco Tuesday theme perfectly. I was already getting full by the time we worked our way through dinner.

A Hearty Sandwich and House-Cut Fries

My daughter's chicken bacon ranch sandwich arrived on toasted bread, alongside a generous serving of house-cut fries.

The sandwich looked substantial, with bacon and fresh toppings tucked into the bread. She especially liked the crispy bread, bacon, and cheese.

Between that big sandwich and the nachos we shared, it wasn't surprising that she ended up taking some home.

Friendly Service and Reasons to Return

Lisa took good care of us throughout the visit, answering questions about the menu and even sharing the family story behind the name.

The atmosphere was relaxed and lively, with plenty of conversation and pool games going on around us.

We also spotted other menu items and specials that gave us ideas for another visit, including burgers and loaded fries. That's one of the nice things about a neighborhood bar and grill: there's always another reason to stop back.
