Cracking Up at The Cricket: Battle Creek’s Comedy Comeback |
Laughs on Tap: How The Cricket Bar Brews Up a Comedy Scene |
The Laughter Before the Silence
Once upon a time, Battle Creek was the place to catch a comedy show, thanks largely to local legend Gary Fields. After touring as a stand-up, Fields opened the city’s first professional comedy club in the 1980s, and for over three decades he reigned as Battle Creek’s “King of Comedy”
His venues, from the Gaslight Comedy Stop to a club on Capital Avenue and even a stint at FireKeepers Casino, drew top national and regional acts for side-splitting shows.
When Fields retired and his club’s lights dimmed, it left a gaping cultural void.
By the late 2010s, the local comedy scene had gone quiet, the only “crickets” in town were the metaphorical kind punctuating unfulfilled punchlines.
Enter The Cricket and Jeremy Kanaga
Fast-forward to today: downtown’s beloved bar The Cricket is putting the funny back in Battle Creek.
The Cricket, founded in 2009 and now owned by Jeremy Kanaga and family, has always been a community hub with a 90-foot cherry-wood bar and friendly vibe.
But Kanaga saw an opportunity to fill the comedy gap.
Under his leadership, The Cricket’s upstairs lounge has transformed into an intimate comedy club, hosting live stand-up shows practically every other week.
These “Comedy in the Creek” nights – usually just a $10 cover – have quickly become a downtown staple, turning Fridays into can’t-miss laugh-fests. “We all need to laugh more,”
The Cricket’s team, and Kanaga are making sure Battle Creek does.
From open-mic up-and-comers to seasoned Michigan headliners, The Cricket’s biweekly shows have revived the roar of laughter that had been missing for years.
In a city that once had to drive to Kalamazoo or Detroit for comedy, Battle Creek now has punchlines on tap right at home. Battle of the Comics: Thanksgiving Showdown
All this momentum is building toward one epic event: The Night Before Thanksgiving Comedy Battle. On November 26, The Cricket will host a clash of comedic titans.
Team SlapTail Nation vs. Team Dan Does Comedy – in a battle royale for the funniest team in townslaptailnation.com. It’s the brainchild of Kanaga and local comedy promoters, turning one of the biggest party nights of the year into a laugh-out-loud extravaganza.
Team SlapTail, captained by the irreverent jokester known as The Beaveman, will square off against Team Dan Does Comedy, led by Battle Creek’s own funnyman Dan Leach.
Each team fields a lineup of standout comedians, and they’ll take turns trading barbs and bits in a fast-paced contest where the audience picks the winner.
There’s even a championship belt on the line for bragging rights ... not to mention that a portion of the show’s proceeds will support local charities (JDL’s Angels for Autism and The Arc of Calhoun County).
In true Thanksgiving spirit, this comedy face-off combines competition with community goodwill. Two teams enter, one team leaves (with the last laugh).
Who will emerge victorious in this comedic cornucopia?
Battle Creek will find out, and no matter who “wins,” the real victory goes to the audience rolling in the aisles. Meet the Comedy Contenders
Here’s a look at the comedians stepping up to the mic for the Comedy Battle – each bringing their own style, accolades, and absurdities:
Together, this lineup is a comedic dream team (split into two teams, that is) set to turn The Cricket into a cauldron of comedy on Thanksgiving Eve.
Each comedian brings a different flavor – from dark humor to high-energy shtick – ensuring something for every sense of humor. The Buzz of a RevivalWith The Cricket’s upstairs stage alive again, Battle Creek is reclaiming its laughs.
The biweekly comedy nights and special events like the Comedy Battle have tapped into a clear thirst for humor in the community.
In the process, Jeremy Kanaga and his crew have not only filled the void left by Gary Fields, they’ve created a whole new chapter in the city’s entertainment story, one that’s fun, punchy, and celebratory.
As locals pack into The Cricket to hear setups and punchlines (beer in hand, of course), one thing is certain: Battle Creek’s comedy scene is back, and the only sounds of crickets you’ll hear are followed by roaring applause. |
