Pastrami Joe's Opens a Delicious New Chapter in Battle Creek

A tasty opening-day lunch and three local food businesses under one roof on West Columbia Avenue

Pastrami Joe's Opens a Delicious New Chapter in Battle Creek

A Fresh Start on West Columbia Avenue

There are restaurant openings that bring something familiar back to the community while giving it an exciting new home.

That was my impression when we visited Pastrami Joe's on Tuesday, October 13, the opening day of its new Battle Creek location at 928 W. Columbia Avenue.

After lunch, a conversation with owner Andrew Scibbe, and a look around the building, I came away impressed.

This isn't just a new sandwich counter: Pastrami Joe's now shares a home with Continental Bakery and True North Ice Cream, giving Battle Creek three complementary food businesses in one place.

A Local Deli With a Story

Pastrami Joe's began in Marshall in 2003.

Founder Mike Caron named the business after his son Joe.

It later established a presence in downtown Battle Creek, and now it has moved to West Columbia Avenue.

Andrew Scibbe, who bought the business in 2022, told me he's the third owner.

It's nice to see a locally familiar name finding a fresh way to serve the community.

Opening-Day First Impressions

I was really impressed with the new setup.

The remodeling looks great, and the space feels fresh, welcoming, and comfortable for dining in.

We arrived around lunchtime, and the team was busy making things happen.

They answered our questions, took care of us, and made opening day feel like a smooth operation from the customer's side.

The Reuben, the Club, and a Good Lunch

I ordered PJ's Reuben, with a side of coleslaw and a Diet Coke.

My dining companion went with Joe's Club, listed with Michigan-raised turkey, ham, bacon, Swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, and mayonnaise.

When the food came out, my first reaction was that it looked beautiful.

And once we dug in, the food was delicious.

I really enjoyed the Reuben, and the coleslaw was especially nice and creamy.

Joe's Club was a substantial sandwich, too; we were already talking about leftovers before we finished.

This was the kind of satisfying lunch that makes you glad you stopped in.

The Opening-Day Crew Deserves a Shout-Out

One of my favorite parts of these food reviews is meeting the people behind the counter.

Before leaving, I caught up with owner Andrew Scibbe and asked to photograph the opening-day team.

I especially want to recognize Stephen, Caleb, and Michael.

They were working together beautifully, keeping things moving and taking care of customers on their very first day in the new space.

Friendly, helpful, and clearly pulling together as a team ... that's a terrific first impression.

Congratulations to Andrew and the whole crew!

Three Great Reasons to Stop at One Address

Here's what makes this move especially interesting: Pastrami Joe's is now alongside Continental Bakery and True North Ice Cream.

You can come in for a deli sandwich, look over a wide selection of baked treats, and have ice cream as another dessert option.

The businesses complement one another really well.

We browsed the bakery after lunch, saw some tempting seasonal pumpkin goodies, and brought home treats.

I chose a cheese Danish, and when I tried it later, the pastry was amazing.

We didn't try the ice cream this time, but I like having that option for another visit.

I can easily imagine friends or families making a stop here for lunch and dessert.

A Welcome New Chapter

I was impressed by the remodel, the welcoming atmosphere, and how well the Pastrami Joe's team handled its first day.

The sandwiches were delicious, and the combination with Continental Bakery and True North Ice Cream makes the whole destination even more appealing.

If you remember Pastrami Joe's from Marshall or downtown Battle Creek, its new home is worth checking out.

And if you haven't tried it yet, here's a good excuse.

Just leave a little room for dessert!
