Battle Creek Classic Still Delivers Big Flavor: Tony’s Hong Kong Continues Serving Generous Portions and Timeless Chinese Favorites |
From an American Dream Story to One of Battle Creek’s Longstanding Takeout Favorites, Tony’s Hong Kong Proves Great Food and Family Tradition Never Go Out of Style |
A Taste of Battle Creek History at Tony’s Hong Kong
Some restaurants serve food. Some serve memories. Walking into Tony's Hong Kong, 174 E Columbia Ave, Battle Creek, MI 49015, feels a little like stepping into both. The moment we walked in, you could tell this place once stood as one of Battle Creek’s classic dine-in Chinese restaurants.
Hanging Asian lamps still hang overhead, and a giant ceramic urn near the entrance hints at the beautiful atmosphere the restaurant once offered during its full dine-in days.
Today, the inside dining area is closed, and the restaurant now focuses on takeout, delivery, and catering.
While that made us a little nostalgic for what it must have been like in its prime, it also added something special to the experience.
You can feel the history in the walls.
That feeling became even stronger after spotting framed newspaper articles telling the story of owner Tony Liu and his family fleeing Communist China in 1973 in pursuit of the American Dream.
The clippings describe the family building a life in Battle Creek through hard work, determination, and a passion for serving the community through food.
You can immediately understand why this restaurant became such a local gem.
We ordered and our food was ready incredibly fast, in roughly 15 minutes.
The woman at the counter, who appeared to possibly be the daughter pictured in the original newspaper articles years ago, was extremely kind and patient while we looked over the menu and decided what to order.
That warmth added a personal touch that’s becoming harder and harder to find these days.
And then came the food.
My wife ordered the Sweet & Sour Chicken combination plate with fried rice and an egroll. The chicken was perfectly crispy with a light crunch that held up beautifully even as takeout.
The sauce had that classic sweet-and-tangy flavor people crave from old-school Chinese restaurants, and the portion size was generous.
I decided to sample several dishes.
The Hot & Sour Soup was outstanding ... honestly one of the best versions I’ve had in a long time.
Rich, flavorful, perfectly balanced, and packed with that comforting warmth that makes you keep going back for another spoonful.
The Pork Fried Rice was delicious and loaded with flavor, but the real standout for me was the Moo Shu Pork. Tender pork, fresh vegetables, wonderful seasoning, and massive portions , I will get several meals from the one order.
And the egg rolls?
Huge.
Golden brown, crispy on the outside, packed with flavorful filling inside, and easily some of the better egg rolls we’ve had around town.
One thing that really stood out was the value.
The portions were enormous.
Both of us will easily get two or more meals from what we ordered, making Tony’s not only delicious but extremely affordable for families looking to stretch their dining dollars.
Yes, it’s a little sad seeing the dining room no longer operating the way it once did. Like many longtime restaurants, Tony’s has clearly weathered changing times and difficult years in the restaurant industry.
But after tasting the food, it’s obvious why they’re still thriving with takeout.
The recipes, the portions, the service, and the story behind the restaurant still matter.
Tony’s Hong Kong isn’t trying to be trendy. It’s something rarer than that these days:
A true Battle Creek classic.
