Beloved Mexican-American Chain Plans to Reopen After Two Decades |
After more than 20 years, Chi-Chi's, the once-popular Mexican-American restaurant chain, is poised to return to Michigan.
In December 2024, Michael McDermott, son of Chi-Chi's founder Marno McDermott, announced an agreement with Hormel Foods to revive the brand. McDermott aims to blend the classic Chi-Chi's experience with modern influences, honoring his family's legacy.
The first new Chi-Chi's location is slated to open in St. Louis Park, Minnesota, on October 6, 2025. This flagship restaurant will feature a refreshed design and a menu combining original favorites like the Original Chimichanga and Seafood Enchiladas with new offerings such as Quesabirria Tacos and the Manchego Burger.
While the initial focus is on Minnesota, McDermott has expressed intentions to expand into the Midwest and East Coast, including Michigan. Specific locations and opening dates in Michigan have yet to be announced, but the prospect of Chi-Chi's return has generated excitement among former patrons.
Founded in 1975 by Marno McDermott and former Green Bay Packers player Max McGee, Chi-Chi's once boasted over 200 locations nationwide, including several in Michigan. The chain filed for bankruptcy in 2003 and closed its last U.S. restaurant in 2004. Since then, the brand has lived on through Hormel's line of Chi-Chi's-branded salsas, dips, and tortilla chips available in grocery stores.
As Chi-Chi's prepares for its relaunch, Michigan residents eagerly await the return of this beloved dining experience. |
