Sir Pizza Battle Creek: A Party-Cut Pizza Worth Trying
Royal Feast pizza and square cut pizza show why this Battle Creek favorite has such a loyal following

In our constant effort to try our way through the pizzas around Battle Creek, there are some places we simply can't leave off the list.
Sir Pizza Battle Creek is one of them.
We had heard for quite a while that Sir Pizza has a loyal following, and one thing people kept mentioning was the distinctive way they prepare their toppings.
Instead of covering the pizza with big pieces that can leave one slice loaded and another a little lonely, many of the toppings are chopped into smaller pieces and spread across the entire pizza.
We decided it was time to find out for ourselves what all that loyalty was about.
We stopped in later on a Monday evening, well after the normal dinner rush, so there wasn't much happening in the dining room by that point.
There was still carryout activity, though, and since we were taking ours home too, that suited us just fine.
The guys working that evening were friendly and helpful right from the start, answering several questions while we figured out what we wanted to try.
For me, the choice was the Royal Feast, which is one of Sir Pizza's signature combinations and comes with pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, onions and green peppers.
I made one Stu-style adjustment: leave off the green peppers and give me jalapeños instead.
My wife went with the Meat Lovers, and we added an order of breadsticks so we could try something besides pizza.
About 20 minutes later, the whole order was ready.
That's a pretty good turnaround for freshly cooked pizza, and the crew took good care of us while we waited.
Once we got everything home and opened those boxes, the thing we had heard about Sir Pizza immediately made sense.
Those smaller-cut toppings really do change the way the pizza eats.
The Royal Feast was covered with finely chopped ingredients, with the jalapeños standing out across the top, and the toppings reached across virtually the whole pizza rather than being concentrated in a few spots.
Sir Pizza also uses a party cut pizza style, dividing the pie into smaller squares instead of traditional wedges.
Put those two ideas together and you get the part I really liked: nearly every little square had plenty going on.
You weren't searching through the box for the piece that happened to get all the meat, mushrooms or onions.
The smaller toppings were distributed throughout the pizza, and it worked really well.
The jalapeño substitution worked for me too, giving my Royal Feast the extra kick I like without changing what makes the pizza distinctive.
My wife's Meat Lovers was just as generously covered, with plenty of meat spread across the pizza rather than a handful of oversized toppings scattered here and there.
And the breadsticks gave us a nice cheesy addition alongside the pizzas.
This isn't a pizza trying to look like every other pizza in town.
Sir Pizza has a recognizable style, from the finely chopped toppings to the square cut pizza presentation, and that's probably a big part of why people who love it really love it.
Even Battle Creek's visitor information has highlighted Sir Pizza's toppings-to-the-edge approach, its small square pieces and the Royal Feast as the specialty to try.
The Royal Feast is also described as an original combination built around pepperoni, sausage, onions, mushrooms and peppers.
After trying it ourselves, I can see why it is the pizza people point newcomers toward.
For our visit, the formula was pretty simple: friendly service, a quick turnaround and a pizza loaded from edge to edge.
Most importantly, when we got it home and actually ate it, it was very good.
And that's what these Cereal City Tasty Times pizza adventures are really about.
Battle Creek has plenty of pizza to work our way through, and Sir Pizza absolutely deserved its turn.
Now we understand a little better why it has its following.
