UpRoot Market Opens in Downtown Battle Creek, Bringing Fresh and Local Options

Community-Owned Co-Op Aims to Revitalize Downtown with Locally Sourced Produce and Goods

Battle Creek's downtown has welcomed a new addition with the grand opening of UpRoot Market & Eatery on November 12, 2025.

This community-owned cooperative is dedicated to providing residents with fresh, locally sourced food options.

The market's arrival addresses concerns about the area becoming a food desert following the relocation of a previous grocery store in 2021.

Located at 119 West Michigan Avenue, UpRoot Market & Eatery celebrated its opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by approximately 300 community members.

The event featured local vendors, free samples, and activities for all ages, including a kids' scavenger hunt and complimentary coffee and kombucha.

General Manager Stacy Niemann highlighted the cooperative's unique structure, emphasizing that it is owned by community members who have a say in its operations and product offerings.

"We currently have around 395 owners who all have a say in how our store is run, the products that we carry, and what we do with our profits at the end of the year," Niemann stated.

Shoppers Janet and Ray Green expressed their enthusiasm for the market's focus on local products.

"As you can see, we're walking out with some delicious soup," Ray said, holding up his bag.

Janet added, "And we like that they use local growers and businesses; that's the best part."

Kitchen Manager Scott Wright, who has experience in local food distribution, emphasized the importance of sourcing from Michigan growers.

"I really like local-grown foods. I think we grow some of the best produce in the world here, and we can use that to make some of the best food that we can," Wright said.

UpRoot Market & Eatery sources many of its fruits and vegetables from Michigan suppliers, ensuring that products are fresh and support the local economy.

The market also features a cafƩ offering meals prepared with the same locally sourced ingredients available for purchase.

The establishment is designed to be easily accessible for downtown residents and nearby employees, aiming to revitalize the area and provide a convenient shopping option.

UpRoot Market & Eatery is now open to the public, offering fresh produce, a variety of local products, and a restaurant-style eatery.
